BluePulse shows how you compete with Facebook and MySpace…

BluePulse, today, released a bunch of new features for its social network.

But why is this social network gaining millions of users when Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc are out there already and are very entrenched?

Because they focused on a smaller niche. Their social network is ONLY for mobile phones.

I love this company and its service.

Want to get up to date on the mobile industry and hear all about BluePulse? You know what to do.

Venture Wire has the facts on BluePulse’s announcement
today. Blognation has other details.

Oh, and BluePulse is yet another best-of-breed companies that came from Australia. What are they putting in the water there?

Oh #2: this video, with CEO Ben Keighran, was filmed in YouTube’s original offices. Is this going to turn out to be a “lucky office?” We’ll see.

  1. @Matthew: You’re comment seems pretty manufactured. No one would say that unless they were put up to it or were being sycophants. Let alone, for this piece of garbage. Not harshly, but it’s all artificial buzz, little substance, even in the sense of the site.

This site sucks. Why invest in a business with a paper napkin business model?

  3. Finally something innovative. “Mobile only” is the way to go, as i’m tired of smaller versions of cluttered web ui’s on my mobile. Pretty impressive mobile site (thought i was in a java app for 5 mins). Where can i invest in this company?

  5. Great interview, Ben has done a great job building a mobile dynamic social portal that people can share with their friends. Definitely the way of the future in providing messaging across the mobile arena. Go dude !!!

  7. The bigger trend here is the fragmentation of media. The big players like Myspace and Facebook have diluted their identities though rapid expansion and there is now a niche for targeted networks. For example social networks just for skateboarders. Sorry but groups just don’t cut it. Also the ad rates for niche networks is much much higher that the $1.50 or so CPMs Myspace charges.

There a post about media fragmentation cycles here:http://senithomas.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/why-all-media-platforms-must-fragment/

  9. I don’t see this working for very long. Anyone with a smart phone can do most of the functions they offer. And with Facebook streaming to phones now you can literally do everything BluePulse offers (without being on mobile web).

  11. That is certifiably, “badass” that Ben is bringing up such a cool service in the former You Tube offices. iSee the mobile networks as really doing some fresh stuff, iMean the PC went to laptops, so the next big platform is obviously mobile. Cheers to Ben and you too Robert for detecting the ticking of Bluepulse beore anyone else, iNever heard of it before, hopefully is catches on, seems like a great service!

  13. Well I just signed on and sent a message to my significant other. Bluepulse said the (recipient) need not be subscribed, but my husband opened the message and he needs to login in order to complete/receive the message?? Uuummm…maybe I should go and download their software onto my phone first. Anyway, it sounds interesting, we’ll continue to investigate :))

  15. Scoble seems to have his hate on for Twitter and a real hard on for BluePulse which makes no sense as far as I can see. Twitter is a much better site, though it doesn’t fill the same need really. BluePulse is a downloadable app for crying out loud, could they make a more cumbersome user experience? There are plenty of great mobile social networks that don’t involve a download, like…you know, real websites…

  17. I wonder though if niche (mobile) is the way to be going. It seems like people want their social networks to be more inclusive, not less so. Unless they are positioning themselves to get acquired by Facebook or MySpace.

  19. Great interview very exciting space, usability is going to be the key. I’m not very good with mobiles but if a service like this was easy to use I’m sure I would make use of it on my commute.

Here in the Uk more and more people are using their phones for email, one driver for this is if they cannot access their webmail at work.

When GPS becomes more common on mobile devices then the possibilities become limitless.

Which camcorder did you use to record the interview, i am looking for a new one at the moment.

  21. Honestly, I don’t see much, there. It’s a social network I can’t use on my computer, which means I can’t use it where I’m a lot of time.
Yes, it’s a more comprehensive social network compared to other, crippled mobile versions. But it doesn’t anything extraordinary. It has no killer feature that can’t VERY easily be copied by a big network, too. There is no special technology or so.

I’d even say the site sucks! On my Windows Mobile-device, I couldn’t jump from one input field to the next through pressing “down” on the four-way-navigation, like it works with _every_ other mobile site. No, they wrote their own, special thing, which isn’t as compatible as it could be and should be. On mobile devices, it’s more important than anywhere else to watch for the very, very small things like this, because using the browsers itself is difficult enough.
