SXSW: too many parties!!!

OK, I was just checking out Upcoming.org for SXSW events (SXSW is a very popular conference among San Francisco geek types). Held in Austin, TX, every year it’s probably popular because of the music and film history of the conference. But it is one of those that are a “must attend” for geeks. Damn, there are so many parties and events I am having a really tough time choosing.

One advantage I have is I have several hundred people reporting to me what their favorite events are. So, I can see which events are really popular (or which ones the friends I want to hang out with are attending). Closer to the event I’ll make a list.

I’m adding to the noise, too
. A bunch of people are asking me to take them out to good BBQ (we’ll go to the Salt Lick, or maybe some other really awesome BBQ place — last year we went and it was really great). So, I am trying to figure out what day/time is best. We’ll do it on Tuesday evening, then head over to the Digg party.

Anyway, last year Twitter showed its usefulness at SXSW. I think this year Upcoming.org is really demonstrating why it’s the best tech event calendar system.

I added all the SXSW events to my own calendar.

UPDATE: talking about SXSW, Viddler and others are putting up videos about and from SXSW and there’s a 3.5 gigabyte file up on Bittorrent that includes all the music from SXSW.

  1. Don’t even bother trying to beat Salt Lick. It’s the best BBQ I’ve ever had in TX, and that includes San Antonio, Houston (rodeo BBQ cookoff included), and Austin (only been to Dallas once). Avoid Pappas BBQ even if you’re familiar with their chains; it’s decent, but they just don’t have the It Factor that distinguishes great BBW.

  3. Salt Lick is incredibly good, but if you haven’t tried Louie Mueller Barbeque in Taylor (20 miles west of Round Rock), you owe it to yourself to go there at least once.

Is it better than Salt Lick? Well, it’s different, but I think it’s equally good.

  5. I joined Twitter last year at SXSW just to find out about the BBQ trip, but didn’t get the update till the next morning….

In Austin it’s easy to walk from party to party and each year there are more parties!

  7. There are lots of good quick-hit BBQ-on-the-run places in Austin (County Line, Green Mesquite, even Rudy’s), but for destination, sit-down, full-till-you-burst ribs and brisket, you cannot beat Salt Lick BBQ.

  9. I usually make it down for the first weekend, but due to scheduling conflicts I can’t make it. (And I’m just north of Dallas! Waaahhh!)

Might I suggest another downtown spot for you to try? Fado is an Irish restaurant on 4th St. (http://www.fadoirishpub.com/austin/)

They usually have live music on Fridays. The food is excellent, and they pull a mean pint of Guinness.

  11. I’m already lamenting all I will miss at SXSW this year – but I’m looking forward to my Twitter feed being deluged from Austin at that time.

SXSW vicariously via Twitter. Yet another party.
