Use Twitter or FriendFeed and win a new Seagate Drive

Disclaimer: Seagate is one of my sponsors and this post is part of that sponsorship.

Next week Seagate will announce some new hard drives on Tuesday — they are pretty cool drives, I got a preview under embargo that’ll run on Tuesday, September 16th 2008, on FastCompanyTV. Bill Watkins, CEO, will ring the bell at NASDAQ. But here’s a way you can win one of these new drives by doing nothing but using FriendFeed or Twitter.

On Tuesday at noon Eastern I’ll be standing by the Kodak sign in New York City’s Times Square (on side of Marriott Marquis hotel). I’ll have 20 drives. First 20 people to show me what Twitter or FriendFeed account they learned about the contest from will win a drive. So that’s one way you’ll win a drive, but that requires you to be in Times Square on Tuesday at noon. Not that easy for most of you.

But, not only will those 20 people win drives, but the 20 people who they learned about the contest from will also win a drive (we’ll send those to you).

All you need to do is Twitter or FriendFeed about the contest, tell your friends who’ll be in New York on Tuesday to come by and pick up a drive and you’ll win a drive too (these are cool drives, by the way, more about them on Tuesday).

Oh, and what happens if one of the 20 say they learned about the contest from me? Well, we’ll put that drive in a pool and randomly give it away to someone who Twittered or FriendFeeded about it.

Why only Twitter or FriendFeed? Because they both have great search engines that we can use to track your Tweets or FF items.

Make sure you include the word “Seagate” in your post. Also, yes, lawyers are involved and Seagate will have some rules and regulations up shortly and I’ll link to those on Monday.

Some ideas to help you win? If you have friends in NYC, make sure they know about the contest. Blog about your Tweet/FF item. Digg your Tweet/FF. Email your Tweet/FF around.

Any questions?

Question: I’m in Argentina, should I even bother with this one? I am pretty sure that by monday, I’ll see the usual “Only open for residents in the US and Canada”, etc. Which sucks big time. Us international users always get the crappiest deals.

This sounds like one of those “Bill Gates is sharing his wealth. I got a check for a million dollars just be sending this mail. Send this mail to earn your own million dollars. This is real, I’m not lying. Honest!” mails.

    Hi Scoble,

Just a suggestion it will be great to also add the date “Tuesday the 16th” to the post. just my .5 cents.
Going to Twitter this now. @shashib

    Thanks,

  9. Robert Scoble Says:

    It is a world-wide contest.

  10. Jaanus Says:

Hey Scoble - I know you can’t be very specific about the product - but can you at least specify if they are internal or external drives? Many of us only have laptops and thus a desktop drive would be useless, but external drive would be very useful ;)

  11. JoshProStar Says:

NYC - bummer.. :( but I did twitter about it.. go Scoble.. :)

  12. Paul Says:

I resent the lowness of this campaign to get people talking about something that isn’t released yet. What ever happened to releasing a kick-ass product and then letting us decide on our own how great it is?

I mean, I read your entire post and I’m not sure if I completely understand all the rules. And you haven’t even released them all. You are just confusing me. I love Seagate drives, but now I love them a little less just for pulling this annoying shit.

  13. toneroo Says:

Paul, chill out. If you don’t want to tweet or blog about it, you don’t have to. What’s so different about this way versus Seagate saying, “we’re releasing some cool new drives on Tuesday.” and you saying in a tweet, “I’m looking forward to finding out what Seagate has up their sleeve, they say there some cool new technology in them.”? Scoble isn’t asking you to say, “Seagate has the best drives on the planet, take my word for it and go buy one of the new ones as soon as they come out on Tuesday.”.

  14. 3magin8 Says:

I agree, twitter and friendfeed do have great search functions.
    Very useful.
    Thanks for the contest news!

  16. Prokofy Neva Says:

Well I might come to this just because it would be fun to meet you and hear you in person, but I have to say, what do you do with a hard drive of this type? I mean, does it play the Internet by itself, or would it requite having to hook up other things to it to get it to work? Is it something that just offices would use or an individual?

Viral marketing, or bribing people to spam twitter and friendfeed? Sounds more like the latter to me.

  20. Rocky Barbanica Says:

Seagate is our sponsor. If we plug them once in a while it’s not a big deal. Wouldn’t you?

  21. UzEE Says:

Nice chance to win. Too bad I don’t know anyone there.

  22. Christopher Coulter Says:

    will ring the bell

On your mark, drop stock, drop. NYT to NASDAQ, change of venue not helping. Stock up on WDC.

And I believe the SEC frowns on insider forward-looking statements that include information about financial prospects, plans and objectives for future operations, economic conditions, trends and known uncertainties…blah blah blah.

  23. Gregg Says:

I don’t understand at all what you want people to do on Twitter and what Twitter account you want them to tell you if they go to meet you at Times Square. Am I supposed to tweet of friendfeed something about Seagate and then tell you my Twitter or FriendFeed account name at times Square? Am I supposed to get somebody else to tweet or friendfeed about the drives and then tell you what their Twitter or FriendFeed account name is? If I go to Times Square and tell you that I learned about it form you on Scobleizer.com, or your Twitter feed, or your FriendFeed feed then I don’t get the drive, but some random other person gets the drive? This is all very confusing. I wish you would explain it more clearly.

  24. Nicole Simon Says:

I think if I bring yet one more device through customs they will not let me pass. this time every security scan was done twice and I had to remove my bag with ‘the tech stuff’ to be inspected. I think a hard drive will be pushing it, but looking forward seeing you again in NY ;)

Yeah it’s OK, thank them, but don’t pull this viral marketing hype creation crap. Just say they have a new product coming out and you are giving away some. I don’t like this abuse of these services just to advertise something. I hope your credibility goes down like it should.

  31. Dario Salvelli Says:

  32. Robert Scoble Says:

Gregg: if you are the first of 20 people in NY to see me and show me your cell phone, or print out of the twitter or friendfeed message you learned about the contest from, you’ll get a drive. That’s simple.

Now, if you are one of the 20 who the winners show me on their cell phone or print out, you too will win a drive.

Not too hard to figure out.

    See ya Tuesday at noon.

  33. Jaanus Says:

Hey Scoble - can you tell us is it an internal or external drive? Laptop people wouldn’t have use for an internal drive ;)

  34. Matt Says:

    Hey Robert!

I don’t know why everybody has to get so upset over this, maybe because it’s been a while since they last got to complain. Yeah, it’s a marketing ploy, but you’re not being dishonest about it. I think its a great way to generate buzz and hopefully at least 20 of your fans and 20 of their friends will make out with a swell new toy. I don’t see how anyone is getting hurt…

I hope to be one of the first to see you on Tuesday, because I’m taking a free train ride in (Thanks, NJ Transit’s Free Transit for Students Week) for a free hard drive! Worst case scenario: I lose a couple hours out of my Tuesday and get to eat some Famous Ray’s pizza. No harm, no foul.

Quick question: should I bring my own anti-static bag? :p

Well my friend ruthie06 was lucky enough to get one….However she was 23rd so she gets free stuff and I get pride. O well. Still a cool contest and glad my friend got some free stuff! Thanks. But if you have some extras I am on twitter at @pfrazier. :)

  40. Mr. Little Says:

  41. Chaz Says:

    Robert,

Nice meeting you today, and thanks for having a couple of extra drives for the people that got there on time but were just past the 20 mark.

  42. Christopher Coulter Says:

As of now, at $11.96 down 9.19%….heh, and only 96 cents off the 52 week low. The after-hours shuffling getting a kick up back to the old last week low, but I predict another drop, even on overall market conditions, plus the Samsung / SanDisk moves are eating up the news cycle. Their FreeAgent Part 2 (or really copycat WDC) announcement was a dud. They look like WDC Passports, guess that brown and orange monstrosity had to finally go.

Oh, WDC up 66 cents a share.

Told yah so. Told yah so.
