FastCompanyTV moves to China (for a visit)

No, we’re not outsourcing, next Wednesday we’ll be going to China for a sizeable trip to hear from entrepreneurs and venture capitalists there and get some tours around factories. I’m telling you this so we can arrange some fun dinners and other impromptu events. It’s Rocky’s first time there, and I haven’t been to China in 10 years, so it’ll be interesting to see the differences.

November 5. Travel day.
November 6. We arrive in Shanghai in early evening.
November 7. Going to Wuxi to see Seagate’s factory and possibly others there.
November 8. Travel back from Wuxi, we’d like to have a dinner in Shanghai — any ideas where we could do that? I remember having fun at the Peace Hotel, but looking for other ideas.
November 9. Meeting with VC’s and entrepreneurs in Shanghai.
November 10. Travel to Shenzhen.
November 11. In Shenzhen. Meet with Phil Baker and Liam Casey, “Mr. China.”
November 12. In Shenzhen. Anyone want to meet up? Let us know.
November 13. In Shenzhen. There’s a Blogger Dinner planned that evening that I’ll attend.
November 14. Travel to Guangzhou to join up with the also happening China 2.0 blogger tour.
November 15. In Guangzhou for the Chinese Bloggercon.
November 16. In Guangzhou for the Chinese Bloggercon.
November 17. Travel to Hong Kong. Any bloggers want to get together in Hong Kong? We’re looking for a fun dinner or something to do.
November 18. Travel home.

We’re also planning out some trips to factories and other things but will try to fit other things in. Hope to see you there!

In Hong Kong I would recommend visiting the computer market in Wan Chai (it’s surreal) or the one in MongKok. The one in Wan Chai is just atop of the MTR and is kind of like a farmer’s market for computer parts. Worth seeing, also can get good deals on really odd things. The one in Mong Kok is a bit harder to find. I also recommend walking down Mong Kok at night–the closest I’ve ever felt to being in the movie ‘Blade Runner’.

Hike around Lang Kwai Fong if you want to be a standard tourist. You should also take the Star Ferry to say you’ve done it over to TST and look back on the skyline of Hong Kong island.

My other bit would be to try and find someone in the IPTV space. China is making great strides in IPTV usage, not just via boxes but also via P2P software apps like Sopcast and TVAnts. CCTV is really ahead of the curve on that compared to many US broadcasters.

Remember to bring a gas mask when you’re in Shenzhen. Seriously, though, enjoy the trip. Shanghai is quite a culture shocker. I’d recommend reading up on shanghaiist.com before you go to catch up on what’s going on via the expats.

I organized a blogger/startup dinner for Jeremiah when he was here in Hong Kong. I’ll also be in Guangzhou at the bloggercon, but would be fun to have another with you here on the 17th.

Walking around Central (on the HK island side) will give you a sense of the hustle and bussle of the financial district. The peak (take the tram ride) will give you a nice grand view of HK, but only if it is a clear day.

Lang Kwai Fong is a good idea for a beer (or 3) after all the walking around.

Let us know what’s the plan for HK !

    Robert,

Sorry we won’t see each other until CNBloggerCon. My itinerary here: http://is.gd/5boW

My fellow CN Reviews blogger Kai Pan would be a good person to party with Sat night 11/8 in Shanghai. He knows the restaurant scene and the club scene. We went club hopping with him last time I was in Shanghai. His email is firstname dot lastname at geemail. Or @neokai on Twitter.

We’ll be in touch! Glad you’re doing this!

November 17th – hey, I’ve lived in HK for 11 years, blogger and IT exec at a major American media company, would love the opportunity to meet you. hongkietown at g mail.

So many good places to eat in Shanghai that it’s almost silly. 3 on the Bund is a classic choice and I had one of the best meals of my life at Jean-Georges, also on the Bund. If you prefer Chinese food, find one of the branches of Xinjishi, Xiao Nan Guo or South Beauty, I’ve had excellent meals at all of them.

In Shenzhen the piracy capital (knock off everything from Rolex watches to iphones to Armani suits) is a shopping mall next to the Lo Wu (Cantonese) or Luo Hu (Mandarin) train station. Dong Men district is where the locals go to shop.

Robert, make sure you have a proxy server available otherwise you cannot even read the comments on your own website. Everybody you will meet can help you with this, but installing one before you arrive might make sense. In China I normally use Witopia.net (which is a paid service).

With regards to streaming video (I saw a tweet from you about this), that not only depends on the bandwidth on the street. Even if that is fine you normally won’t be able to stream because of the Great Firewall, which effectively reduces the bandwidth that goes in and out of China. You’ll realize the impact of this the moment you fire up your computer in Shanghai.

Aside from these technical issues I am sure you’ll have a great time in China, for me it’s the best country in the world to live and do business right now.

You’ll realize the impact of this the moment you fire up your computer in Shanghai.

Aside from these technical issues I am sure you’ll have a great time in China, for me it’s the best country in the world to live and do business right now.
