Got a real-time ego problem? Get a room!

Oh, be honest. You’ve searched for yourself on Google, right?

That’s an ego search. Here’s mine.

But doing ego searches today is far more complex than it was back in 1998 when I did my first Google ego search.

Today you have to look at what people are saying about you on Twitter, I use Twitter Search for that. On blogs (I use Google’s blog search for that). On friendfeed (you can search on stuff there). On Facebook. If you’re in the news you’ll want to track what’s said about you on Google News. And in other places.

What’s the best place to do that? Well, you might try a friendfeed room. Here’s my ego room. You can watch what people around the world are saying about me — in real time.

But, seriously, let’s stop talking about me for a while. My ego is big enough. Let’s talk about what you might do with a room like this that collects RSS and other real-time feeds.

1. You could create a room to track an event, or a tag on Twitter for an event. That’s what I just did with my Consumer Electronic room.
2. Want to get a group of people together who talk about certain topics? Here’s a room that is collecting tweets and blogs from doctors and health care professionals.
3. Got a blogging network and want to have a place to discuss it? Here’s the room for the Read/Write Web team.
4. Are you a company that’s trying to support your users in real time? Here’s Evernote’s room.

Anyway, sign in, and you can get your own ego-feeding real-time room. :-)

    I just started using FriendFeed after watching your video. I like it a lot, it’s really helping to simplify the way I scan over all the various streams of information coming in.

    I used imaginary friends to track this kind of stuff, after experimenting with a room at first. I can’t really tell if there’s a big advantage either way, although a room must be better if you want to share it.

    I added some feeds generated from FriendFeed’s search results to a couple of rooms but the FF landlords disabled the ability to do this back in September. I decided to work around this limitation by routing the FriendFeed search results feeds through my Google Reader account and adding that shared feed back into a room. It is just an experiment to amuse myself right now but I want to eventually enhance the room via the FF APIs when I find the time.

    The room’s feed consist of the videos (youtube & vimeo) added to FriendFeed by the people I am subscribed to on FF along with the videos added by their friends. I am subscribing to all the people that subscribe to this room so if anyone wants their videos (and those of their friends) to show up there, simply add yourself to the room …

    I was pleasantly surprised by the entertainment value of the room’s clips. If enough people join the room and start “liking” items in the room it should get even more interesting.

    Do you know the funny thing? Several times I have searched for my name, my friends and bf name in google just to know what would be the result. But it’s the moment I know that what I did is called ego surfing or googling yourself! Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Next time I will try friend feed room.
