Plane crash in NYC captured on real-time web

The world has become a village thanks to Twitter. http://bit.ly/WYzv
News was power for those who could obtain the news.
News was distributed by controlled sources.
Now news is reported and distributed by the people.
All people who want can receive all news.
The news power is no longer defined by the money you can invest for obtaining news.

The people bitching about the “real-time web” are missing the point I think.

I first came across this story on Facebook. Then I saw it again, scanning the blog feeds I follow. If I was really interested (I am not) I would have checked Google News or even Google search. I have not watched TV news at all in the last month and have only read the local daily 4 times in the last 5 weeks. The point: In the past we relied on Big Media to filter and inform us of what was happening in our community and the world…but not any more…Big Media is dying. That IS the point I think.

“Real-time web”?? What the hell does that even mean. From the “tweets” you posted it appears that most people are relaying what they are seeing from watching what the ACTUAL NEWS OUTLETS are reporting. If it’s not that, it’s people repeating what other twits are saying. I challenge you to show me, in all this twitter blather, where you got any piece of news that wasn’t also being reported by professionals who know what the hell they are doing.

Most of the tweets were probably not bringing any new facts/information to the table. However they do provide another perspective than from mainstream media, and it is up to the viewer of either to determine the validity.

Thanx to the amazing pilot and crew there was no ‘crash’.
I don’t think using that overly dramatizing word is needed just to get attention. The true story in itself is enough.
