Facebook passes 175 million users

Is it just me or is Facebook’s growth speeding up?

Dave Morin, who runs Facebook’s application platform team, tonight announced on Twitter/friendfeed that Facebook had passed 175 million users.

Congrats. I told a few people at Davos that Facebook would be THE story of the year in Silicon Valley. Twitter is trying to make it interesting, but Facebook really is far far ahead.

  • In my opinion Facebook is the best, but!!! I read somewhere that Myspace had reached 200 million users. Is there any official notes that can confirm this?

The reason for the acceleration is that Facebook once regarded "active users" as those who'd signed in in the last three days, whereas now it's thirty days.
  • I think face book already has combine "great marketing rumors management and management conflict smartly.he bans thousand member, rip off there property.act like a redeemer, say sorry for the fault and claims that facebook is Democracy.though from time to time "this" what make more people wonder about facebook and more asking other to have facebook account
  • woaw, huge member number, facebook is second phenomen of internet, first one is google offcourse

cravings for human interaction has not changed. cravings for something new has not changed.

internet all for sex? porno, dating, marrieds or unmarrieds? YES
any media just for advertising dollars? YES
facebook experience has turned me on to resources, however, it is not making my life better. people i am sharing with seem to be. i have control up to a point. sifting through friends and notice i have deleted and block males. i can tell you why....
  • After living for many years in the U.S. I moved for a few months to the Czech Republic. I knew a few people there who have been using Facebook for some time, but I noticed that it was only in the last 6-9 months that the number of FB users has been exploding! I think a lot of the new users will be international users.
  • I heard Facebook is like the most popular social netowork at the moment. Like they were even in traffic with Bebo or somthing and now they have doubled it. Even I've joined Facebook and it's pretty good. BTW dude... you have one nice blog! :P

And, yet the "valuation" went from $15 billion to the ConnectU self-valuation of $3.7 billion. So the increased eyeballs LOST them $11.3 billion...a "success story" only a Microsoft "investment" could love.
  • Great for Facebook.

    Netlog (www.netlog.com) has 35 mio
    Not bad for a 50-people-company.

Great going facebook folks! I remember some of the top engineers at Google admitting it during their TGIF that they are moving to Facebook. In fact, in this video, http://www.naarisakhi.com/balcontest.php?action..., Larry's wife admits using Facebook from her grad school days.
  • I'm not surprised Facebook is growing with all that Facebook spam floating about. Fact is: I get so much Facebook spam that I've simply given up using Facebook altogether.

With the unemployment rate at 7.6% - and projected to hit 8.8% by Q309 - it doesn't surprise me that Internet use, including networking, social or otherwise, like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, is growing at a more accelerated rate. It would be interesting to look at how the stats have changed since the recession hit. Perhaps the Internet is a new "recession proof" sector?
  • After reading your post title, Robert, I said to myself, "So what?"

Facebook is gaining users. That shouldn't be news to anyone. Why is it to you?
  • Brian Acklen
Yes Facebook is definitely speeding up. I'm seeing tons of non tech-savvy people showing up every week. As long as they can continue to innovate, I think it's going to have more staying power than MySpace did.
  • Jeremy
Except that Dave does not run the team. He's a marketing guy. C'mon Scoble.
  • now if only google could buy them, i spend about a third of my time on fb, a third of my time on twitter and the rest of my time in gmail
  • Even low-tech folks like me are considering signing-up:

    Facebook is really taking off.
  • Congrats to Facebook!
  • I have been a user of Facebook for about 5-6 months now and I have been able to re-connect with a lot of old friends and some family I have not talked to in a decade. And I get to see pics of what is going on right now too. You have to love what facebook offers.

How many people does myspace have. I know Twitter does not have as many members but it has more quality and it moves faster. It is like a fast moving train.
