Exclusive CES video: Plug Pogoplug in and get your files anywhere

This is an example of a trend at CES I was talking about: that gadgets this year are getting very simple, even though they are doing pretty complex things. Here we have first video demo of Pogoplug. What is it?

You plug it into your wall. Plug ethernet into it. Plug a USB hard drive into it. And now you can get your files everywhere. Very minimal setup. Nothing geeky to know. Works through firewalls. Here we have the first video demo of this with the entrepreneurs who came up with this idea.

  1. That’s really cool. I’m wary that it seems to be tied to their website (can you even manage the device if the company goes under?), but for that price, it’s practically a throw-away anyway. Looks like a great gift for your less technically inclined family members still slaving away on the sneakernet or e-mailing files to themselves.

  3. Thanks for putting up that video Robert. I ordered one online just after watching your video.

DropBox is nothing like this. Dropbox is limited to 2GB free and jumps up to $10 per month for a max of 50GB. Whoa! That’s not a good deal at all.

Questions on Pogoplug that I’d like answered are: 1/ Can it handle partitioned disks and grant permission to access each partition separately? That would make it more useful. 2/Will it work with Apple’s Time Machine software or Super Duper backup software?

  5. That’s a cool device. It would be even cooler if it was a PD that could be powered by a POE switch.

  7. appropo for its name, considering the name of the John Wayne Gacy clown and his approach from behind.

  8. Many ISP’s have as part of the TOS that you are not allowed to run any type of server (which I think is criminal, by the way, they sell you bandwidth and you should be able to use it however you want.). Products and services like PogoPlug basically set up a web file server through your router. This is a violation of most people’s TOS for their internet connection. As these products and services become more popular, will Comcast and other’s start to enforce this criminal clause and kick people offline?

  10. greggish: First they will contact you and tell you since you are running a server you qualify as a business and must pay their business rate.
